African Confederation

The African Confederation is a fictional nation on Earth in the Star Trek science fiction universe. This nation is composed of states representing the former nations on the African continent. In some of the novels based on Star Trek, this nation was referred to as the United States of Africa, The concept of a real "United States of Africa" was actually put forward as part of a famous speech by the renowned pan-Africanist and first Ugandan president Kwame Nkrumah. This is not to imply that he favored Star Trek, although he might have.
A "United States of Africa" itself is reminiscent of the "United States of Southern Africa," mentioned in the novels of Arthur C. Clarke, not to mention "Federated Southern Africa" conceived by science fiction author David Brin. For his part, Clarke may have conceived of the USSA in an effort to tactically imply the abolition of apartheid, without openly criticizing the South African government which was then in power. In the Star Trek novel "Traitor Winds," it is revealed that Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (whose name means "star freedom" in Swahili) attended Public School Number Nine in Nairobi, Kenya, United States of Africa. Speculation thus points to the name having been changed,as the political organization of Africa further improved between the 23rd and 24th centuries.
The "African Confederation" is notable as the known birthplace of Geordi LaForge, though his precise place of birth is not specified. The only place in Africa which was actually identified in Star Trek: The Next Generation was Dakar, Senegal, mentioned as the location of a factory for making medical nanites. Even if not every nation on the continent is a member of the "African Confederation", it can be hypothesized that at least Kenya and Senegal are members, and that this Confederation may be more of a supra-national unit like the European Union.
