Admiral Duncan pub
|
The Admiral Duncan is a pub in Old Compton Street in the heart of London's gay district. It is named after Admiral Adam Duncan, who defeated the Dutch fleet at Camperdown in 1797.
On April 30, 1999, it was the scene of a bomb blast when David Copeland, as part of a series of bombings against gay people and ethnic minorities, detonated a nailbomb which killed 3 people (including a pregnant woman) and wounded around 70.
It was once in the ownership of the Scottish & Newcastle Brewery but changed hands in 2004.
The place has changed from the picture. It has been repainted bright pink.
Also, the Westminister City Council made the Admiral Duncan and all other bars in Soho take down their gay flags. The Council claimed to be enforcing a rule requiring permits for flag poles.
David Morley, the bar manager of the Admiral Duncan who survived the bombing, was killed in a hate crime beating October 30, 2004.
