Template:Infobox University2 Adelphi University is a private coeducational institute of higher education, with its main campus located in Garden City, in Nassau County, New York. The college was founded in 1896 in Brooklyn, New York, and takes its name from its location on Adlephi Street in Brooklyn, where it is related to the Adelphi Academy, a private secondary school. The Garden City campus was established in 1929. Today the university has campuses in New York City, Poughkeepsie, and Hauppauge.

Adelphi is the most selective private institution on Long Island, admitting only 70% of the freshman application pool. Currently, Adelphi enrolls 8,000 students from 40 states and 64 foreign countries.
Adelphi can trace its roots to Adelphi Academy, a private preparatory school founded in Brooklyn in 1863. It was located at 412 Adelphi Street.
Adelphi College, one of the first co-educational college chartered by the University of the State of New York and the oldest private liberal arts university on Long Island, was founded in 1896 through the efforts of Dr. Charles H. Levermore and Timothy Woodruff. Dr. Levermore became its first president. Woodruff, a former Lieutenant Governor of New York State, served as president of the Board of Trustees.
Adelphi's Garden City campus, established in 1929, has five buildings designed by the renowned architectural firm of McKim, Meade & White and two buildings designed by the internationally celebrated architect Richard Neutra. In 2002, the Garden City campus became a registered arboretum.
In 1943, under the direction of Mildred Montag, Adelphi College created the first Central Collegiate School of Nursing, which became one of the largest units of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt dedicated Alumnae and Harvey Hall in May 1944.
Among Adelphi's 90,000 alumni are three of Long Island's state senators, two members of Congress, the former chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, the current president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a former president of Allstate Insurance, a co-founder of Nextel Communications, CEO of Omnicom, and the former White House physician to President Clinton.
Famous Adelphi alumni in the arts include Jonathan Larson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical Rent, Alice Hoffman, New York Times best-selling author, and hip-hopper Chuck D of Public Enemy. Well-known faculty include Frank Augustyn, host and co-writer of the Bravo ballet series Footnotes, and Paul Moravec, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Adelphi athletes have been Olympic gold-medalists, including long jump world record holder Bob Beamon, runner Mel Pender, and softball second baseman Dot Richardson. Other Adelphi athletes, such as soccer players Gary Sullivan and Chris Armas, and basketball player Wayne Nelson, have been drafted to professional teams.
Created over 25 years ago, Adelphi University's Learning Disabilities Program was one of the first of its kind in the country.
The Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies was the nation's first university-based graduate school in clinical psychology.
Adelphi University's dance program, founded by Ruth St. Denis in 1938, was the first dance department in an American university. It has since become a cornerstone of the Department of Performing Arts.
