Absalom, Absalom!
|
Absalom, Absalom! is a novel by William Faulkner, published in 1936. It is a story about three families of the South, taking place before, during, and after the American Civil War. There are many surprising twists and turns in the lives of the Sutpens, the Coldfields, and the Compsons. The primary focus of the story is on Thomas Sutpen -- how he began, the success he achieved, and his eventual ruin.
While the main mode of the story is Southern Gothic, the story of Sutpen is revealed using many devices borrowed from detective stories.
The story of Quentin Compson, a main narrator, also appears in The Sound and the Fury.
