BS6312 is the British Standard governing telephone plugs and sockets.

Plugs
There are two types of British Telecom plugs — 431A and 631A. 431A is 4-way and 631A 6-way. They fit a standard "type 600" telephone socket. There are also plugs with only two contacts commonly seen on modem leads. These are a recent introduction and do not seem to be easily available as separate parts.
Usage in Hong Kong
Before the handover of Hong Kong, all the domestic telephone sockets installed were BS6312 ones but there no stipulation on commerical telephones sockets. Both Registered Jack (RJ) and BS6312 systems were (and are) found in commercial telephone installations.
However, after the handover, the Hong Kong Government gradually replaces the BS6312 sockets into American RJ ones. Service providers install RJ sockets, instead of BS6312 ones, for clients in new installation, relocation or maintenance projects. However, old BS6312 sockets before the handover are still in use and there is no compulsory replacement programme.
