- May 21 - The nation is shocked as former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, who sent troops to Sri Lanka in 1987, is assassinated by a Tamil suicide bomber in southern India during the election campaign.
- May 31 - The Government of India constitutes the Company Law Board as an independent quasi-judicial body thus giving up direct control on matters of company law.
- June 15 - When the general election results are all compiled, the Congress Party has won a plurality of votes.
- June 21 - Congress leader P.V. Narasimha Rao becomes Prime Minister. He faces the daunting tasks of restoring national unity and overhauling the troubled economy. India launches sweeping economic reforms by opening up trade and industry and dismantles decades of socialist control.
- June 24 - J. Jayalalithaa is sworn in as chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time.
