Astronomy
- Galileo Galilei publishes his initial telescopic observations in a short treatise entitled Sidereus Nuncius (Sidereal Messenger). In the same year he discovers Jupiter's four largest satellites (moons): Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
