Geography
Östra Göinge is part of Göingebygd, the area between Scania and the northern provinces Smalandia and Hallandia. It has varied geography. As most of Scania, the land is flat, and has good agricultural areas, but as the adjacent northern district Smalanda it has forests and lakes. The lake Helgeån flows through the municipality and besides being lookworthy it offers good fishing.
Östra Göinge is still mainly rural area. The largest city is Broby with a population just above 2,000.
History
The Göingebygd cherishes it history of Snapphanar, a group of revolters in the 17th century who were taking refugee in the forests. They where fighting the Swedish army in the times after the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, when Scania became part of Swedish territory after being part of Denmark.
The dialect of the Göinge bygd has historically been distinguishable from the southern Scanian dialects as well as the northern Smalandian dialects, perhaps because the population took pride in a historical autonomousy and having been inhabited by resistance people.
The city arms depicts two palm trees crossing each other, a traditional symbol of peace and unity. It came into use after the treaty of Roskilde. The lower part of the arms depicts hammers, and was added when the municipality was joined with an adjacent municipality in 1976l.
