User talk:Mat cross

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Optimization (mathematics)

Hi Matt. Thank you for your TeXifying this article. However, I would think in that particular case the HTML formulas looked just right, and actually quite pretty, but now they became images, and, at least on my machine, look kind of oversized. Just wonder what your reasons for the change were. Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov 21:12, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello. I'm in the camp that feels that indented formulae should be displayed in LaTeX. In articles I start up I try to have all TeX. The problem, I believe, is with the rendering algorithm / software / whatever. It also seems sensible to tag these formula as <math>..</math> for purposes in the future. I just tried to find the lengthy discussion about this in Wikipedia, but I can't. It was around the Help pages somewhere. BUT, I'm quite a passive Wikipedian really, so if you feel strongly about it being html then I don't care if you change it back. But see if you can find the discussion first, if you haven't already. mat_x 08:20, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Try to look that up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics, where all the math talk takes place. If you don't see it, you can post this as a question there, and see what others will have to say (others, is the other mathematicians over here).
I will of course not modify your TeX-ifying until this is settled one way or another. Oleg Alexandrov 15:58, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Here we go: [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mathematics/Archive4%28TeX%29) There is no right answer, of course. mat_x 19:05, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Right. So we need to use our judgment on a case by case basis. I would still believe the html looked better than PNG on Optimization (mathematics) given the low complexity of formulas and no issues with consistency and bad display. But I will leave it that way, it does not matter much either way (in this particular case).
I hear your points. I'll bear these in mind before I do any more TeXifying. mat_x 20:48, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Please note the belated welcome above, and you might consider putting Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics on your watchlist, if you would like to be kept in touch with math chat over here. Oleg Alexandrov 19:24, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Note it why? It only appears to have been trigerred by my removal of earlier, resolved, chat issues. I'm not a new user. mat_x 20:48, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Garden of Eden / Scunthorpe

Actually, I just added a link to Scunthorpe since I saw it already in the Garden of Eden. There may not be ANY justification for this. I do recall England being mentioned as a place for the Garden of Eden, but no specific location. I will look further. Please let me know if you find anything. If you wish to remove the reference from both or either, please do. It might be somebody's joke I suppose. Still, it seems almost too bizarre NOT to be true. Thanks. Jimaginator 11:48, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

Hmm. I am coming up short on Garden of Eden and Scunthorpe connection. There does seem to be a pub or restaurant there. I think I got snookered. I am going to remove in both Garden of Eden and Scunthorpe. Interesting how the exact wording gets spread around, and here I am perpetuating the same nonsense. Thanks for flagging this. I'm no expert on flags and so can't be sure whether these flags exists or not. However, it is clear that they are not in common use, so it'd seem reasonable to me to remove them. Warofdreams 09:10, 5 May 2005 (UTC)
