Talk:List of hip hop musicians

"I think Freestyle Fellowship needs credit."
- I don't know anything about the Freestyle Fellowship, but I have a question. Will this be a list of different rappers, or are we to include rap groups/crews as well? It might be a good idea to figure this out before we get a bunch of stuff that we have to cull from the list.

- Maybe we should do:
Mr. T.,
- I like that, as you get the best of both worlds that way, with no repetition in the list. (I'm sure someone would argue that rappers like Dr. Dre have had more successful/influential solo careers, and need/deserve a heading rather than a subheading. For me, this is not important.) Let us commence...

- Something which hadn't occurred to me before, doing this means that some non-rappers are included. That doesn't bother me terribly with the disclaimer at the top, but it's worth considering. Now the other issue is the literally dozens of aliases that some of these guys use (see the bottom of Wu-Tang Clan for an extreme example). Some, like GZA/Genius and Andre Benjamin/Dre/Andre 3000 are common enough that some readers might be looking for one and not realize they are the same, but others aren't and might make the list look cluttered.
- I removed Linkin Park because that seems like an incredible stretch. I'd be okay with including them on a list of hip hop artists, but I don't think anybody calls them a rap group. Allmusic doesn't, for one.
- Can someone come up with a nice looking way of including that tag information like 'Deceased' and what-not?
- I removed the "BlacknAsian Krew" as I've never heard of them and can't find anything on google. I removed the lead singer of Linkin Park for reasons described above.
- I think some of what's listed here is self-promotion... Anyone wanna cull nobodies from the list?
Tuf-Kat 21:47, Jan 7, 2004 (UTC)
- Who would you call a nobody? Some of the "artists" (Heavy Les Wanted, for one) on this list have nothing on AllMusic or Google. Others have very little info on Google. Some appear to be foreign (as in, not from the USA, or at least an English-speaking nation), with little or no presence in the English-speaking world... or at least the part of the world covered by AllMusic and Google. Jonna is a good example of this. There was a Jonna page on the SonyMusic Finland site, but not much of anything outside of that. Clearly the artists that don't appear to even exist should be cut, but what about those who are merely foreign and/or unpopular? Lots of the artists show up on both AllMusic and Google, but don't appear to be anything other than a minor player on the underground rap scene. Do they really belong here? punishinglemur 03:01, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- What do people think about making this a list of only English/Ebonic rapping rappers, since the Wikipedia's been split up into it's different language variants?

- Good plan... see my response to Tuf-Kat above for more on foreign/non-English rappers. punishinglemur 03:01, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- Wikipedia has been split up for users who want to read in various languages, not to divide up the content. An English speaker may want to read about Finnish-language rappers, for instance, and would not be advised to go to the Finnish Wikipedia and learn Finnish to do so. I think this should remain list of rappers, though there's no reason there can't also be a List of Francophone rappers or whatever, as that could be useful as well.
- As far as how famous one has to be, there is no real consensus on the issue -- that's what the talk page is for. Anybody that meets the following criteria is definitely eligible:
- Good plan... see my response to Tuf-Kat above for more on foreign/non-English rappers. punishinglemur 03:01, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- Has released a recording on a major label
- Has worked with a performer already on the list
- Has recorded for a minor/indie label if that label is reasonably well-established or prominent
- Has had any kind of hit, even a relatively minor or regional one
- Has gone on tours that cover a large region or an entire country
- While these are obviously vague, I think they work as guidelines. It's probably best to just do what we want until there is a disagreement, and then work out what criteria are needed. It isn't worth having a major discussion if there won't be a debate for quite some time. Tuf-Kat 21:05, Jan 22, 2004 (UTC)
Yeah, to be honest, it's a little insulting for Punishinglemur to speak of foreign rappers along with unpopular ones. Foreign rappers have often got much more street-cred than many of their American counterparts, as they haven't gone and sold out. I don't want to start some kind of rap war, but this is not an American page - it's international. If people want to make a list of U.S. rappers, they can go ahead: it would make sense to have one. But the 'List of Rappers' is open to people from around the world - being popular in the U.S. doesn't mean exclusive importance - please go and rethink your Americocentrism, cause honestly that is not what Hip-Hop or Wikipedia is about... Many English-speakers are interested in learning more about foreign rappers and many rappers from the U.S. have had collaborations with international artists. So they're interconnected and not some seperate entity. I think Tuf-Kat's guidelines sound reasonable though. --Pteron 00:48, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Who is Afu-Raju?
i only know afu-ra (i added him, too). and i deleted the Rappin' Duke, because that's a song (by Shawn Brown), not the name of the rapper per se. User:Wathiik I'll also delete r&b singers such as aaliyah, coz they're clearly neither rappers nor hip hop musicians. wathiik.
R&B musicians
Looks like someone put aaliyah back into the list. well. i know some people see her as a rapper, but hey, I never heard her rap. i really think she should only be featured in the R&B list. wathiik
- I really haven't listened to enough Aaliyah to have an opinion, but this is a list of hip hop musicians, not rappers. Tuf-Kat 22:31, Oct 21, 2004 (UTC)
- List of rappers redirects to list of hip hop musicians. Perhaps it shouldn't. Otherwise, perhaps there should be an article with a list of other genres' rappers. Tim Ivorson 09:10, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- List of rappers should redirect to list of hip hop musicians. It's all just different terminology. And, no, Aaliyah was never a rapper, she was strictly an R&B singer. --b. Touch 00:45, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
