Shelton is a city located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 38,101.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 82.7 km² (31.9 mi²). 79.2 km² (30.6 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.26% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,101 people, 14,190 households, and 10,543 families residing in the city. The population density is 481.2/km² (1,246.4/mi²). There are 14,707 housing units at an average density of 185.8/km² (481.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.44% White, 1.12% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 3.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,190 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $67,292, and the median income for a family is $75,523. Males have a median income of $50,210 versus $36,815 for females. The per capita income for the city is $29,893. 3.2% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
