Scio is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,914.

History

The town was first settled around 1803. Scio was incorporated in 1823 from the Town of Angelica. Some of its territory was later lost during the formation of the Towns of Amity, Wellsville, and Willing.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.3 km² (35.3 mi²). 91.3 km² (35.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.

The Genesee River flows northward through the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,914 people, 729 households, and 532 families residing in the town. The population density is 21.0/km² (54.3/mi²). There are 894 housing units at an average density of 9.8/km² (25.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.39% White, 0.26% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 729 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% are non-families. 19.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,679, and the median income for a family is $38,250. Males have a median income of $30,242 versus $20,595 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,472. 14.6% of the population and 11.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.0% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Knights Creek -- A location on Route 9 near the south town line.
  • Norton Summit -- A location north of Petrolia on Route 18.
  • Petrolia -- A hamlet on Route 18 near the south town line.
  • Scio -- The hamlet of Scio is at the junction of Routes 9 and 19 near the north town line. The Genesee River passes by the village.
