Ortonville, Michigan

Ortonville is a village located in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,535.

Overview

Ortonville, a northern exurb of Detroit, was founded in 1848 by Amos Orton who built a dam across Kearsley Creek to furnish water power for his sawmill. The town was platted in 1866, and later incorporated as a village in 1902. It is located about halfway between Pontiac and Flint.

Its primary public schools are Brandon Schools, located in Brandon Township. Students are comprised mostly of Brandon and Groveland Township residents. Brandon High School is the home of the Blackhawks.

Fun Fact: Ortonville is home to Cook's Farm Dairy, makers of what is widely regarded as some of the best ice cream in the region.

Surrounding towns include Goodrich to the north, Oxford to the east, Clarkston to the south, and Holly to the west.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,535 people, 537 households, and 400 families residing in the village. The population density is 598.7/km² (1,546.2/mi²). There are 572 housing units at an average density of 223.1/km² (576.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.24% White, 0.07% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 1.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 537 households out of which 45.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.29.

In the village the population is spread out with 32.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 35.5% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $60,972, and the median income for a family is $72,443. Males have a median income of $59,083 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $24,110. 4.8% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
