North Collins (town), New York

North Collins is a town located in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,376.

The Town of North Collins is in the southern part of the county and is one of the "Southtowns" of Erie County.

History

The Town of North Collins was incorporated in 1852 as the "Town of Shirley" from the northern part of the Town of Collins. In 1853 the town assumed its current name.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 111.4 km² (43.0 mi²). 111.0 km² (42.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,376 people, 1,254 households, and 915 families residing in the town. The population density is 30.4/km² (78.8/mi²). There are 1,403 housing units at an average density of 12.6/km² (32.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.26% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 1.51% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 2.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,254 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $43,781, and the median income for a family is $50,781. Males have a median income of $36,087 versus $26,667 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,253. 7.7% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in North Collins

  • Eighteen Mile Creek (South Branch) -- A stream flowing through the northeast part of tht town, passing the community of New Oregon.
  • Langford -- A location at the junction of Routes 75 and 249 in the northern part of the town.
  • Lawtons -- A hamlet on Route 62 in the southwest corner of the town.
  • Marshfield -- A location near the south town line on Route 75.
  • New Oregon -- A hamlet in the northeast part of the town.
  • North Collins - The Village of North Collins is located in the northwest corner of the town.
  • Shirley -- A location southeast of North Collins village on Shirley Rd., just south of Route 249.
  • Winter's Pond -- A small lake south of Langford.
