Collins, New York

Collins is a town located in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,307.

The Town of Collins is on the south border of the county and is considered to be one of the "Southtowns."

History

The area was first settled around 1808. The Town of Collins was formed in 1821 from the Town of Concord. The town lost land to form the new Towns of Brant in 1839 and North Collins in 1852.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 124.8 km² (48.2 mi²). 124.6 km² (48.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.

The south border of the town is Cattaraugus Creek and Cattaraugus County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,307 people, 1,754 households, and 1,187 families residing in the town. The population density is 66.7/km² (172.6/mi²). There are 1,884 housing units at an average density of 15.1/km² (39.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 66.85% White, 22.62% African American, 3.47% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.16% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 11.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,754 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 13.3% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 48.6% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 273.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 318.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,444, and the median income for a family is $45,647. Males have a median income of $30,215 versus $26,071 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,082. 8.5% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Taylor Hollow -- A community in the northeast corner of the town on Route 62.
  • Whites Corners -- A location in the northeast corner of the town on Route 75.
  • Zoar -- A location in the southeast corner of the town.
  • Zoar Valley -- A scenic valley formed by Cattaraugus Creek.
