Mason County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 28,274. Its county seat is Ludington6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,216 km² (1,242 mi²). 1,282 km² (495 mi²) of it is land and 1,934 km² (747 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 60.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,274 people, 11,406 households, and 7,881 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (57/mi²). There are 16,063 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.84% White, 0.73% Black or African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 3.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,406 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,704, and the median income for a family is $41,654. Males have a median income of $33,873 versus $22,616 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,713. 11.00% of the population and 8.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.50% of those under the age of 18 and 7.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
