History

Before the Miami canal was built, Jacksonburg, located in the northern part of Butler County, was the trading center of this region; it had a population of 600 to 700 when Middletown had around 300. The farmers for miles around went to Jacksonburg to buy the staples and clothing they needed. The canal changed all of this. The village of Middletown had promise of a great future; she had unexcelled transportation facilities. In 1827 the canal was opened as far north as Middletown.
