Gloucester Township is a township located in Camden County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 64,350. Gloucester Township is governed under the Faulkner Act (Mayor-Council) system of municipal government. The township was first established in 1695.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 60.4 km² (23.3 mi²). 60.1 km² (23.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.

Gloucester Township borders Hi-Nella, Lindenwold, Magnolia, Pine Hill, Runnemede, Somerdale, Stratford, and Winslow. Gloucester Township also borders Gloucester County.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 64,350 people, 23,150 households, and 16,876 families residing in the township. The population density is 1,070.0/km² (2,771.2/mi²). There are 24,257 housing units at an average density of 403.3/km² (1,044.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 83.11% White, 11.55% African American, 0.16% Native American, 2.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 3.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 23,150 households out of which 37.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the township the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $54,280, and the median income for a family is $62,992. Males have a median income of $42,451 versus $31,427 for females. The per capita income for the township is $22,604. 6.2% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
