Dix, New York

Dix is a town located in Schuyler County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,197.

The Town of Dix is located on the south border of the county, southwest of Seneca Lake.

History

The town was formed from the Town of Catlin (Chemung County) in 1835.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Chemung County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.8 km² (36.6 mi²). 93.6 km² (36.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.28% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,197 people, 1,643 households, and 1,071 families residing in the town. The population density is 44.8/km² (116.1/mi²). There are 1,797 housing units at an average density of 19.2/km² (49.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.31% White, 0.52% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,643 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 29.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,081, and the median income for a family is $40,669. Males have a median income of $31,633 versus $21,051 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,682. 12.7% of the population and 8.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
