Montour Falls, New York

Montour Falls is a village located in Schuyler County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,797. A small waterfall in the village helps give the village its name. The name is derived from Catherine Montour.

The Village of Montour Falls is mostly within the Town of Montour, but a small part in within the Town of Dix.

History

The village was previously known as Queanettquaga, Catharine's Town, and finally Havana in 1788. It was also a county seat of Schuyler County in the past. The current name was adopted in 1790. The village was located on the former Chemung Canal. The village was incorporated in 1836.

Geography

Montour Falls is located at 42°20'57" North, 76°50'47" West (42.349209, -76.846450)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,797 people, 701 households, and 419 families residing in the village. The population density is 230.5/km² (597.7/mi²). There are 755 housing units at an average density of 96.8/km² (251.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.61% White, 1.00% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 701 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the village the population is spread out with 19.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 77.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $29,018, and the median income for a family is $36,307. Males have a median income of $31,064 versus $21,813 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,671. 15.3% of the population and 11.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
