Chesterfield, New York

Chesterfield is a town located in Essex County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,409. The name possibly is from a location in New England.

The Town of Chesterfield is in the northeastern part of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1802 from part of the Town of Willsboro. The early settlers were from the New England area.

An ice storm in 1998 damaged the town.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Clinton County, New York, and the eastern town line is Lake Champlain and Vermont. The AuSable River borders the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 272.6 km² (105.2 mi²). 204.2 km² (78.8 mi²) of it is land and 68.4 km² (26.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 25.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,409 people, 948 households, and 678 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.8/km² (30.6/mi²). There are 1,374 housing units at an average density of 6.7/km² (17.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.76% White, 0.25% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 948 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,875, and the median income for a family is $43,015. Males have a median income of $36,417 versus $25,156 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,421. 12.8% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Port Douglas -- A hamlet in the eastern part of the town on the shore of Lake Champlain.
  • Port Kent -- A hamlet in the northeast corner of the town on Lake Champlain.
  • Keeseville -- Part of the Village of Keeseville is in the town on its northern border.
