Bridgewater is a town located in Oneida County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,671.

History

The first settlement occurred around 1788. The Town of Bridgewater was formed from the Town of Sangerfield in 1797.

Geography

US Route 20 crosses the south part of the town.

The south town line is the border of Madison County and Otsego County. The east town line is the border of Herkimer County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 61.8 km² (23.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,671 people, 596 households, and 454 families residing in the town. The population density is 27.1/km² (70.1/mi²). There are 639 housing units at an average density of 10.3/km² (26.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.31% White, 0.78% Black or African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 596 households out of which 42.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% are non-families. 19.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,724, and the median income for a family is $33,750. Males have a median income of $29,074 versus $20,956 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,875. 10.1% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • North Bridgewater -- A hamlet in the northern part of the town on Route 8.
