Zilwaukee, Michigan

Zilwaukee is a city located in Saginaw County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,799. The city is located at the southwest corner of Zilwaukee Township. It is near the Zilwaukee Bridge.

Zilwaukee was founded in 1848 when Daniel and Solomon Johnson, two brothers from New York City, built a saw mill here. Officially organized ten years later, the Johnsons gave the name Zilwaukee to the town purposely to cause people to confuse it with the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in hopes of luring immigrants here to work.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.90% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,799 people, 711 households, and 509 families residing in the city. The population density is 312.9/km² (810.7/mi²). There are 729 housing units at an average density of 126.8/km² (328.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.94% White, 1.78% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.61% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 6.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 711 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $42,014, and the median income for a family is $47,981. Males have a median income of $37,292 versus $25,586 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,491. 6.4% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
