Wong Kei Ying
|
Wong Kei Ying (黃麒英) was a Chinese martial artist, best known as the father of the legendary Wong Fei Hung. He was one of the Ten Tigers of Canton - the top ten kung fu masters in Guangdong (Canton) around the end of the Qing dynasty.
In many Wong Fei Hung movies (especially the Once Upon a Time in China series), Wong Kei Ying was pretty much a side character, appearing only in certain story parts. The 1993 movie Iron Monkey features a fictional account of Wong Kei Ying as well as a 10 year old Wong Fei Hung.
Wong Kei-Ying learned his kung-fu from his father Wong Tai and from his father's mentor Luk Ah-Choy who was a direct pupil of Hung Hei-Gun, who is another Chinese folk hero in his own right. The style they practice is referred to as Hung Gar Kuen which translates literally as Hung Family Fist. This is the style Kei-Ying taught his son.
