Whiting is a city located in Lake County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,137.
Geography
Whiting is located at 41°40'34" North, 87°29'26" West (41.676027, -87.490460)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.5 km² (3.3 mi²). 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 46.34% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,137 people, 2,091 households, and 1,281 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,126.9/km² (2,914.1/mi²). There are 2,313 housing units at an average density of 507.4/km² (1,312.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.37% White, 0.56% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 9.09% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 25.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,091 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.3% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.18.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $34,972, and the median income for a family is $40,994. Males have a median income of $33,565 versus $21,981 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,518. 12.3% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
History
In Whiting, Indiana in the late 1970s shopping carts were used in one of the first extreme sport called carting. A shopping cart is held outside of a moving automobile and then released with one of two objectives. To obtain the highest maximium top speed for the released shopping cart or to successfully aim the cart accurately at a target, such as a moving train. In addition to the driver there were either one or two athletes who held the moving cart. The driver's objective was to accelerate as quickly as possible. Convertibles were the preferred type of automobile.
