Tidal (1996) | When the Pawn (1999) | Extraordinary Machine (???) |
When the Pawn is the second album by American singer/songwriter Fiona Apple, released in 1999 (see 1999 in music). Its full title is:
- When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King
- What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight
- And He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring
- There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind is Your Might
- So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand
- And Remember That Depth is the Greatest of Heights
- And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land
- And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right
The album came in special packaging that contained sheer red paper around the inserts to create a sultry effect. The title was written as a poem over Apple's face on the cover.
The debut single, "Fast As You Can," was fairly popular and received moderate video airplay on television. The follow-up singles, "Limp" and especially "Paper Bag", were less successful. The video for "Paper Bag" featured Apple as a damsel in distress lamenting something in a bus station while children dressed as gangsters and molls dance around her.
