Wheeler is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,263. The town is named after Captain Silas Wheeler, an early settler.

History
The town was organized in 1820 from the Towns of Bath and Prattsburg.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 119.5 km² (46.1 mi²). 119.4 km² (46.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,263 people, 437 households, and 335 families residing in the town. The population density is 10.6/km² (27.4/mi²). There are 586 housing units at an average density of 4.9/km² (12.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.36% White, 1.27% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 1.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 437 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 19.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.21.
In the town the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $35,806, and the median income for a family is $37,632. Males have a median income of $27,137 versus $21,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,555. 17.9% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
The 1890 population was 1,084.
