West Bromwich West by-election, 2000
|
The Member of Parliament for West Bromwich, West, the Rt. Hon. Betty Boothroyd, (the Speaker) resigned from the House of Commons on September 2, 2000.
A by-election to fill the seat was held on November 23. In 1997 the major parties had observed an old tradition by not opposing the Speaker seeking re-election. On its return to partisan politics the seat reverted to Labour, much where it been in 1992.
