Wayland, Michigan

Wayland is a city in Allegan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,939.

The city is located at the northwest corner of Wayland Township, Michigan, but is politically independent. The city has also incorporated a portion of land in the south of adjacent Leighton Township. U.S. Highway 131 forms the western boundary of the city.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,939 people, 1,466 households, and 1,027 families residing in the city. The population density is 526.2/km² (1,363.8/mi²). There are 1,591 housing units at an average density of 212.6/km² (550.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.75% White, 0.63% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 2.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,466 households out of which 41.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 14.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $41,852, and the median income for a family is $50,298. Males have a median income of $35,811 versus $25,786 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,077. 7.9% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
