Wasp interceptor

The F-110 Wasp was a dedicated fleet interceptor deployed by the Confederation in the fictional Wing Commander computer game. It was deployed in the 2680s as the first dedicated fleet interceptor in Confed; previously various space-superiority fighters had been used for that role.

The hallmark of the Wasp was its oversized, expendable rocket booster that accelerated it to very high velocities. This enabled last-ditch intercepts of enemy fighter raids at much greater distance than ever before. Another unique weapon was the swarmer missile, which was a pack of eight missiles guided by a forward optical sensor on the launching fighter. As long as the enemy fighter remained in the forward visible cone of the launching fighter, the missiles would hit -- they were effectively unjammable.

The F-110A was armed with four swarmer packs, two heatseeking missiles and six image recognition missiles. Two mass drivers, two charging mass drivers and two tachyon guns rounded out the armament. They proved most effective at fleet defense aboard the carrier TCS Midway.

The F-110S Black Wasp was an improved version. It boasted greater armor coverage and replaced the previous gun loadout with a pair of rapid-fire dust cannon and two heavy cloudburst electrical-discharge cannon. Four long-ranged image recognition missiles were carried vice six (and no heatseekers), but the swarmer loadout was increased to eight packs. The dust cannon remained the favored gun armament of the Black Wasp: the huge capacitor banks allowed it to fire for extended periods of time with predictably devestating effects on enemy fighters. Because of the devastating power of the dust cannon, use of the heavily draining Cloudburst gun was generally deprecated.

It is not quite understood how an extra four swarmer packs were installed in the Black Wasp, though Confed Weapons Test Facility claims that the Wasp's revised gun rack, specifically the removal of the four mass driver weapons (charging and non-charging variants, according to reports, require separate firing structures), as well as their ammunition tanks, made enough room (dust cannons, though also mass drivers, fire much smaller rounds whose mass is culled from the fighter's reactor exhaust filter). The removal of two im-rec missiles and the two heat-seekers may also have contributed.
