Waldo is a city located in Alachua County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 821.
The city has received national attention and earned the ominous distinction of being one of only two official speed traps designated by the American Automobile Association (the other being Lawtey a few miles to the north)[1] (http://www.aaasouth.com/previous_issues/jul_aug_01/travadfl.asp), due to the city's strict enforcement of the local speed limit on US 301 as it cuts through town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 821 people, 347 households, and 207 families residing in the city. The population density is 184.3/km² (477.5/mi²). There are 407 housing units at an average density of 91.4/km² (236.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.61% White, 15.23% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 6.46% from two or more races. 2.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 347 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% are married couples living together, 16.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 33.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $24,028, and the median income for a family is $34,643. Males have a median income of $25,083 versus $20,956 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,397. 16.7% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.0% of those under the age of 18 and 14.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
