Viking Line is a Finnish shipping company that operates a fleet of large combined ferry/cruise ships (RORO type) between Finland, the Åland Islands, Sweden and Estonia.
In Finnish the ferries on the route between Finland and Sweden are called ruotsinlaiva.
Viking Line traces its roots back to the start of ferry traffic between Sweden, the Åland Islands and Finland. Viking Line AB was formed as a marketing company owned by three of the ferry operators. After Sally Line AB went out of business due to bad investments and later Rederi Ab Slite due to economical problems, the remaining operator SF Line integrated Viking Line and later changed its name to the same.
SF Line started naming their ferries with "ella" in the end because of former managing director Gunnar Eklund's wife's name is Ellen. Rederi Ab Slite's ferries got their names from Roman and Greek mythology.
Viking Line is operated from the Åland Islands.
