Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,302 km² (889 mi²). 2,286 km² (882 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.70% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 84,088 people, 30,071 households, and 22,192 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (95/mi²). There are 32,945 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.22% White, 6.30% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 15.92% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 39.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 30,071 households out of which 37.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 12.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.23.
In the county, the population is spread out with 29.10% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $38,732, and the median income for a family is $44,443. Males have a median income of $35,484 versus $21,231 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,379. 12.90% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.20% of those under the age of 18 and 11.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
