Vernon is a town located in Oneida County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,335.
The Town of Vernon is on the western border of the county.
Geography
The west town line is the border of Oneida County, New York and is formed by the Oneida Creek.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 98.7 km² (38.1 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,335 people, 2,112 households, and 1,484 families residing in the town. The population density is 54.0/km² (139.9/mi²). There are 2,266 housing units at an average density of 23.0/km² (59.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.94% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,112 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. - Sherrill -- The City of Sherill, the smallest city in the state, is in the western part of the town.
- Vernon -- The Village of Vernon, centrally located in the town, east of Sherrill on Route 5.
- Vernon Center -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town, located on Route 26.
