Japanese term translation
Does anyone have an idea to translate 政令指定都市 to English? -- Taku
- Long: "Cities designated by government ordinance" [1] (http://www.city.osaka.jp/english/mayors_message/conference/2003_05_14.html); short: "Government Ordinance City" [2] (http://www.business.econ.city.hiroshima.jp/english/page3-01.html). --Menchi 03:43, 7 Oct 2003 (UTC)
- Thank very much. I googled but couldn't find good one. -- Taku
A couple of more
- 中核市
- 特例市
- 地方公共団体
They are terms related to Japanese cities and local governments. -- Taku
- 中核市 = "core city" [3] (http://www.nii.ac.jp/sokuho/articles/ncid/AN00075641/19970700_31.html), [4] (http://www.city.okazaki.aichi.jp/yakusho/ka1030/gaiyou/aisatsu.htm). You may already knew this, if not it may interest you: A Japanese core city must be over 300,000 in population, and 100 kmē in area. A Chinese source (http://www.cass.net.cn/chinese/s30_rbs/files/rbzl/xzqh.htm)
- The Nippon Foundation Library's glossary (http://nippon.zaidan.info/seikabutsu/2000/00086/contents/188.htm) translates 特例市 as "special case city".
- I cannot find Japanese reference, but a Hong Kong online .doc (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gpa/wang_files/XZX%20on%20Japan.doc) says 地方公共團體 is "local authorities", and a Mainland Chinese webpage (http://www.calaw.cn/include/shownews.asp?newsid=1907) say it is "local self-government".

Thanks a lot. Particularly, a website http://nippon.zaidan.info/seikabutsu/2000/00086/contents/188.htm glossary seems really good place to find out translation terms. -- Taku
