Your insight on wikipedia

Hi,

First of all I appreciate your patience for taking the time to read this.

I am Amruta. I am a first year masters student, studying Human Computer Interaction at Georgia Tech. Currently i am enrolled in a course on online communities. As part of the course we are supposed to study an online community of our interest.

I went through wikipedia and was really amazed to find that they also had a site in Hindi. I found this really interesting and so thought about exploring how the content differs when the language changes, how people access wikipedia when it is in a different langugae or specifically when it is their mother tongue.

And so the theme for my project is

Wikipedia is available in many different languages. While the interface and concept stay the same, the content and the way people utilize it seem to be significantly different from one language to another. I can see this clearly when I compare the Hindi and English versions. How does culture effect the content and the way people participate in creating it? Which features stay the same? Which features are more exploited in different languages/cultures? If there are similar sites to Wikipedia in their original language, why do those subjects prefer (or do they) to participate in Wikipedia rather than the other alternative?

As part of this project we are supposed to interview 3 people from the community we are studying. The final result of this paper will be to write a paper based on our findings. I have a project group of 3 people all of different nationalities, one Turkish and another Spanish. I was trying to find indian and hindi speaking users for this and came across your name on wikipedia and so i thought you might be able to give me some insight on this.

The main reason to write to you is, i would really appreciate it if you could be one of my subjects for conducting an interview as you might be able to give me some insight into this issue. Participation in my study is completely voluntary. Your name or personal details will never be revealed to anyone during this course.

In case you have any doubts you can go through this page http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2005/cs6470_spring/researchstudy/

Waiting to hear from you.

Thanks a lot for your time again, Amrutasl

Mumbai

I have just finished an exhaustive article on Mumbai. Please proofread it as I want to catch as many errors as possible before I submit it to as a FAC. Please do not add more information to the page as I have tried my best to keep the size under 30kb,and if any editing is required please ensure that the size does not exceed 30kb. Reverted edits

Dear Hemanshu, I took the liberty of reverting the edits you made to Indian current events. I am sure you know that a major changes to approach need discussion between editors. I am happy to discuss your views and understand the reason for your edits. However, reversals of approach definitely should be after discussions *only*. I am glad to have your support on Indian current events. Best Regards Arunram 15:49, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I object to your characterization of Template:IEOTD as ugly and baseless. I must submit that is a matter of opinion and I respect yours. Like the saying goes, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. I also strongly object to you removal without discussion, again. It is not for one individual to decide. One can always debate and discuss. I started Indian current events and I have been keeping it going as best as I could. And I notice that you keep chipping in with content from time to time. The intent of using pictures (which you removed last time) is to make the page more interesting for readers and to provide a context. This is a first in events pages and is different from other events pages in this regard. The purpose of Indian Event of the day is to single out a key event and to provide more context to it, than a normal event entry can. These would be useful going forward a year or so from now when one looks back at events. I believe it is useful. If it is ugly, well help better it, if you can. It is welcome. Dont drop it since you find it ugly, that is not the spirit of Wikipedia. The ugly duckling does have "usefulness"! Why do you find it baseless? Every event listed there is a key event for that day. Do you have an objection to any? If you find the content baseless, then please say why you think so than merely make a characterization. That is least useful from a perspective of bettering the attempt. After all review comments are meant to better the work product. Peer review is always welcome. I do know people who find these new approaches interesting. Till, we discuss this further and resolve, I am bring back IEOTD on Indian current events. I am fine to seek larger opinions and perspectives, if we need to. Do reply on this talk page. Please do think about what I have shared and read the objectives IEOTD on its page and see examples on archive page. Best regards Arunram 20:46, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

issues about school articles

In November 2003, there was a VfD debate over Sunset High School (Portland). The debate was archived under Talk:Sunset High School (Portland). What to do with the article is still being contested and has been recently re-nominated for VfD at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland).

I am writing to you because you have participated in such debates before. There still does not exist a wikipedia policy (as far as i can tell) over what to do in regards to articles about specific U.S. public school. My hope is that a real consensus can come out of the debate, and a real policy can take shape. Take part if you are so willing. Kingturtle 02:33, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Vajpayee

Hi Himanshu,

I just removed the redirect from Vajpayee to A B Vajpayee's page as I felt Vajpayee has prominence on its own also, apart from his famous personality. Let the Vajpayee surnamed community link its information on page rather than limit it to one person.

Please check the page Vajpayee/

hello

Hello, I a month old wiki of 54 years. Whenever and wherever I find an article about Jharkhand / Bihar / several India related topics, I find your name. You seem so familiar to me now. Have a nice time and happy editings.--Bhadani 12:24, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Jagjit Singh Aurora

Since it's a stub and more of a news item than a "Did you Know"-item, I've moved your entry on Jagjit Singh Aurora to the deaths in May section on Current events. Hope you don't mind.

If you want to suggest items for DYK in the future, try to choose them not because of newsworthiness. Also, articles in DYK are preferably not stubs (at least 1000 characters of text). DYK is sometimes swamped with entries, so size is an initial sifting mechanism. More info is at WP:DYK. Mgm|(talk) 19:03, May 4, 2005 (UTC)

Marathi wikipedia

Hello Hemanshu,

Congrats for the great work!
I am a user (and also an administrator) on Marathi wikipedia. Currently we are facing several problems especially with localization of interface and internals.
I went through documentation provided on meta site and lost totally.
It seems that we need to modify few .php source files, but not surely.
Can you provide some clues about the process and/or guide us throughout?
Thanks and regards
-Harshal

Marathi wikipedia localization

Hello Hemanshu,

Currently interface is translated using Special:Allmessages page. However there are several instances such as numeral, default namespace name (Wikipedia:), variables (like CURRENTMONTHNAME), etc that left us puzzling about localization.
Immediate problem is about 'Wikipedia:' namespace which can be used to act pages as templates (e.g. anniversaries, etc). I want to change it to 'विकिपीडिआ:' and thus to make them act as templates.
In meta wiki, each language wikipedia has its own language.php or equivalent file that needs to be modified, which I am not sure about.
Since you are familiar with the Wikipedia since long time, I could see that you can help us out.
With regards,

-Harshal

marathi digits

Hi hemanshu,

I saw that hindi wikipedia has all digits converted into devanagari? How can same be done for Marathi? I saw your discussion about this on [1] (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Requests_for_languageXX.php_update#Localised_digits). Please help regards, mr:User Talk:कोल्हापुरी

Rabindranath Tagore

Hi Himanshu, could you please tell me why you are repeatedly editing out the category Bangladeshi people from Rabindranath Tagore? I tried to discuss this in the talk page, but you didn't reply. Let us have a discussion there please. As for why Rabindranath can be categorized in Bangladeshi people, I would suggest you take a look at some references I am providing here.... Rabindranath's ancestors came from East Bengal or were associated with it in different ways. And Rabindranath himself spent considerable time in what is now Bangladesh. The Kuthibari at Shilaidoho is preserved as a museum. Rabindranath used to sail through the Padma river in his houseboat. In fact, much of his time pre-nobel prize was spent in what is now Bangladesh. So, don't just delete references abruptly without checking out the references. Also, my point is, if you don't want Rabindranath Tagore categorized as a Bangladeshi people, you cannot categorize him as 1. Indian poet 2. Hindu poet, using the same logic. So let us have a discussion on this. Thanks. --Ragib 18:23, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

Cricket wikireader

As you are a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket, I thought you might be interested in this. I have made a proposal to create a WikiReader for cricket. Perhaps you could comment at User:Smoddy/WikiReader Cricket on my suggested content. Cheers, Smoddy (Rabbit and pork) 16:23, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

LanguageMr.php and localization

Hello Hemanshu,

Could you please guide me for localization of Marathi Wikipedia?
The numerals and some other stuff seems out of 'Allmessages' page in 'Special' namespaces.

Nehru

Sir,

I wish to ask you for some help and guidance. There is a problem at the page of Nehru. The listing at the Request for Comment was disputes "between registered and anonymous users over whether a lengthy, unsourced section containing comparisons between Nehru and Joseph Stalin should be included." The main problem is that Nehru was emulating Stalin, praised Stalin and that the economy that Nehru started is Stalinist. I am aksing you since you seem pretty knowledgeable on India topics. Can you help? Thanks in advance. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 21:46, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Stubs

Thanks for adding the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation article. As part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting, I have replaced the generalized {{stub}} tag with {{org-stub}}. When you create new articles, it would be great if you could use these more specific tags whenever possible. Thanks, and continue contributing to Wikipedia! A user's uploaded images

Hey Hemanshu, I would appreciate if you checkout this comment I posted and see if there is anything to add/subtract there. (warning its a lengthy comment). Also if you have any idea whether pictures of deities bought off the streets of india can be scanned and released in public domain, let me know. --Spundun 03:43, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Image of Homi Bhabha

I am looking for an image of Homi Bhabha. I tried finding one online but was not too sccessful in finding one with a clear license. Is there an easy way to get hold of an image like this? Is there a central place on wikipedias where I should be asking such questions? --Spundun 04:03, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

List of drugs

Hi, I've noticed that you're rearranging the List of drugs pages. My original list had over 100 items per page which I thought would be a manageable size for most people, your current setup seems to have around 20 (for num-ab anyaway). I was wondering what your plans were for these pages, and if you think that 20 items per page is the best way to set up the pages. Matt 22:20, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

Date format

Yes, I have an explaination. I am a perfectionist and the date format is in yyyy-mm-dd format which is the ISO 8601 representation. I strongly adhere to international conventions and therefore I use this rendering. Please note that wikiing the above link would render it normally. See also Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Dates. Regards,  =Nichalp (Talk)= 05:26, May 30, 2005 (UTC)

Cricket team infoboxes

No-one's suggested these before. I can see that they might be a good idea. We have sort of infoboxes on pages such as Surrey County Cricket Club in 2005. I suppose they would have much of the info on there, plus notable achievements and some other data. If you have anything in mind, please suggest it over at WP:Cricket. Kind regards, jguk 11:13, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

I see you've been adding infoboxes:) Might I suggest you still discuss this at WP:Cricket? Mostly as I'm sure there is additional info that could be added, and I'm sure it would benefit from broader discussion. For example, the governing body and the overall results in Tests and ODIs could be added. I'm also not sure on the usefulness of Template:Infobox International Cricket team. Don't get me wrong, I think the infoboxes improve the articles are a good thing, I just think it might be better to get wider views on what they should cover. Kindregards, jguk 19:55, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

Discussion at Talk:Pakistan

Would you like to join the animated discussion on the Pakistan's talk page? The current issue is whether "Pakistan is famous for its support of Taliban and 9/11 terrorist" is a suitable sentence to start the article's first paragraph. Your contribution would be much appreciated, as the current discussion seems to be more of a dialog between Ragib and SamTr014 (talk contribs). Thanks !--PrinceA 06:32, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
