User talk:Camembert

Talk page archives are here, here, here, here and here. If I was less lazy, I'd summarise instead. Did I say "lazy"? I meant "busy saving the world."

Queries, praise, criticism, requests, all welcomed. Rants tolerated. I might reply here, I might reply on your talk page - it depends on whether I think you'll be interested in the reply, on the direction of the wind, on how many cups of coffee I've had that day, on many other factors.

Question and Answer

Hi, you responded to something I wrote over a year ago on "mesothelioma". I created the article, and what I wrote was deleted because it was on another website and there was a concern about copyright. In fact, I did have authority from the copyright owner to post that here. The Wikipedia entry has been expanded and rewritten many times since, so no big deal now. I just wanted to respond on that. Sorry for not reading your response until today.

One other question: I created an article today on the writer Veronica Geng. However, it shows up as Veronica_geng. Small "g" on the last name. Wikipedia must be case sensitive, because when I added her name to the List of Humorists page, it shows up as a non-existant link. It is looking for Veronica_Geng, not Veronica_geng. Is there any way to change what I wrote to Veronica_Geng? Thanks. --Carax

Hi - I've responded on your talk page. --Camembert

Dear chess friend!

Please read my user page, thank you.

Ps. Congratulations for sooooo long talk page of yours :) --Popski 08:25, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Sorry, been away a bit, need to archive :) --Camembert
In case you have not already noticed, Andreas Kaufmann and I have just added a few links regarding piece value theory and calculation to Chess piece point value which may be helpful to general readers and hopefully, to you as well. Unfortunately, some of these sources are speculative, purely verbose and non-mathematical. --BadSanta
Thanks. I'm not sure they really address the specific things I was concerned about (whether playing engines really give the king a value of 200 pawns, and whether we really want to lay out a single, rigid, contentious system for assessing positions by numbers), but they're certainly useful additions to the article. --Camembert

Tiny Tim

Hello! Quite a large page you have here :). I am writing you to say I enjoyed that sound sample you provided in the Tiny Tim article. I see Wikipedia going towards having more rich media, and I think it's a good idea. Bye for now, --ShaunMacPherson 09:43, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks (though my own views on such sound samples have changed a bit, and I don't upload them any more... but that's a different story...). --Camembert

Did you know...

...that although I like to make sure there is no sexist language at Wikipedia as indicated at an above section of this talk page titled "Removing sexist words", there are also 2 Wikipedians named Vapier and Smirts that (on September 14, 2004) tried to make Wikipedia use sexist language, as I stumbled across at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. Do you have any opinions?? 66.32.255.74 17:02, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia:UK Wikipedians' notice board

Hi Lee how are you? User:Francs2000 has created the above page and invited a number of british people to join. I can't see an invitation to you on your talk page so just in case he missed you out, I'd like to formally invite you to join (or at least add it to your watchlist) Theresa Knott (The torn steak) 10:18, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thanks Theresa - been away for a month or two, and I'm not really back now, but I'll be sure to take a look at that when I have a minute. --Camembert

Tristan motif

See: Talk:Tristan chord. My problem is that the midi file played on my computer at what seems to be the correct tempo (if langsam is quarter note = 60). Do you know what tempo you created the midi file to be? Hyacinth 22:04, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

It was meant to be dotted quarter note = 35, but it didn't quite work out that way. I'll say a little more on Talk:Tristan chord. --Camembert

Hi

Hi Camembert, I hope all is well with you! We miss you a bit. Quiet around here; it's mainly Opus and me writing these days. Cheers! Antandrus 02:13, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

A general note to arbitrators

Hello -- I'm writing this once but it's addressed to each of you, my colleagues. :-) I don't know if anyone's noticed, but we are under increasing criticism from Wikipedians because we are slow in judgment -- indeed, we have cases that were accepted 3 months ago still languishing in voting paralysis. I'm not writing this to necessarily chastise you -- two or three of you are ahead of me in keeping up with things, I know! But I see many pages where I and a few others have considered, proposed, and voted -- we are waiting for the rest of you. Please do so soon. If you are too busy to be on the AC (I often feel that way myself), perhaps it is time for new elections, but until that happens, I urge you to vote. We have a few tireless arbitrators doing a lot of work crafting some good proposals, but they're not getting attention, and the community grows restless. I hope we can ease some of the grumbling. I apologize for the impersonal message, and again, I'm not no a high horse here. I do think it's time for action, though. Leave me a note if you have any quarrel with my comments here -- I meant them well. See you at WP:RFAr... Jwrosenzweig 22:48, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

As a courtesy, I wanted to let you know that I have raised the question of your continued participation on the Arbitration Committee at Wikipedia talk:Arbitration Committee. --Michael Snow 06:28, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I just want to reassure you that I meant no offense, to you or anyone else, and apologize for any that I caused. I was tackling the issue in the most effective way I could think of, but sometimes the advice to "be bold" deserves a grain of salt when people's feelings may be involved. Please understand that I appreciate your work, and I certainly remember that you were much more active and always a thoughtful participant earlier in the year. My intent was to focus on what Wikipedia needed from arbitrators in general, not to tell anyone personally what they needed to be doing (as if that would work in a volunteer project anyway). --Michael Snow 00:41, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Bach featurification project

Hi, it occurred to me that we ought to have a stunningly good article on Bach. I see from the edit history that you've done some sterling work there, so I was hoping that you could a) suggest some improvements, and/or b) help with making a References section, which we would need to get it featured (I assume that some or all of the current Further reading and External links sections have been used as references, but I don't know which). Thanks, Mark1 09:01, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Could we get a decision from you?

At one point, you indicated that you did not plan to continue as an arbitrator beyond the end of the year, and then when I repeated this statement elsewhere you jumped in to say you hadn't made a final decision on this question yet. I understand that this sort of thing deserves careful consideration, and I don't think it's at all "flighty" (as you put it) to experience this kind of uncertainty. However, as the election continues to approach, I really think we need to hear your final decision, one way or the other, and I've raised this again among other issues at Wikipedia talk:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2004#Time to make some decisions. If you could let us know on that page within the next few days, it would be greatly appreciated so that we know whether your position on the Arbitration Committee is up for election. --Michael Snow 18:43, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay Michael. I've now posted at the above page that I will not be continuing as an arbitrator beyond these elections. If that needs to be announced somewhere more prominent, then do let me know (or feel free to announce it yourself). --Camembert

Thank you. I'll try to make sure the relevant pages get updated that we're electing seven people instead of six. --Michael Snow 20:58, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Image you've uploaded.

Howdy! I'm here because of the Humungous Image Tagging Project, and I'm curious about the copyright status of an image you uploaded. The picture in question is Image:1-D00-16.Rh2.png, and it doesn't currently have an image copyright tag on it. If you could tag it with something to let us know what the copyright is, that would be great. A couple of common tags are {{gfdl}}, if you made the picture and release it under the GFDL, or {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use. For a full page of these, you can go to the image copyright tags page. If none of this makes sense, you can leave a message describing the coypright status on my talk page, and I'll tag it for you. Thanks much! ^_^ --Sparky the Seventh Chaos 23:43, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. I notice that this image seems to be a version of Image:1-D00-16.Rh2.jpg. If you know the copyright status on that one, could you tag or describe it, too? I'd ask the original uploader, but it looks like whoever it is hasn't contributed since last year. Thanks again! --Sparky the Seventh Chaos 23:43, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)

The original image, I believe, was uploaded by User:Lir under a different name, so you might want to ask him about that. The status of that image probably determines the status of mine - everything I upload is released by me into the public domain, but if the original was GFDLed, then mine is probably GFDL too as a derivitive work. Anyway, I'll mark them both as GFDL for now to be on the safe side (as neither image is used in any article anyway, this might be a bit academic - maybe best to just delete them both). --Camembert

RFC pages on VfD

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:26, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Unverified images

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following images:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. [[User:Poccil|Peter O. (Talk, automation script)]] 21:30, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

Done those three, plus a few others uploaded by me. If I've uploaded it and it's not a fair-use excerpt of a work in copyright, then it's PD. --Camembert

CheeseDreams RfAr

Hi, I was wondering if you might review the CheeseDreams request for arbitration and vote on whether to hear the case. john k 22:13, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

My quest for better music style!

I know you're a music guy, so I was hoping you'd support my quest to institute proper conventions for classical music titles instead of this "italicize everything" stuff. See Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (titles)#Classical music titles. — Flamurai 07:38, Dec 12, 2004 (UTC)

I'll have a proper look and respond when I've a little more time. I like the idea in theory... in practice, I worry it will lead to petty arguments. Such is Wikipedia ;) Like I say, I'll have a proper look later.
Any style guide is going to lead to petty arguments. When I wrote it, I tried to make it flexible in terms of the styles used in prose. The thing that drives me nuts is the improper italicatization of generic titles like Symphony, Sonata, etc. — [[User:Flamurai|]] 02:56, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

Unverified Images (chess diagrams)

Do you know the license for Image:Rook underpromotion avoiding stalemate.png or Image:Knight underpromotion example.png? I've tagged them both as 'unverified', but if you have a license for them, please tag them or just tell me what it is and I can do it. grendel|khan 23:02, 2004 Dec 19 (UTC)

They're PD, like all my other diagrams. I'll tag them. --Camembert

Also Image:Classical French after 9.Bd3.png RedWolf 20:19, Dec 23, 2004 (UTC)

Also PD. Feel free to tag my diagrams as PD yourself if you like. --Camembert

No problem

I was browsing it and was frustrated that that section was nothing more than just "Chiburdanidze wins, unexplained 40 year gap, Xie Jun repeats as champion, here's the champions" Now we just need some pictures to spruce up the whole thing and submit it to featured status. I would like to have one of every champion, as sort of a gallery, and also some pics of the games. I think ChessBase has a gallery of all the women's champions, which should make it much easier.--Etaonish 00:22, Jan 8, 2005 (UTC)

Could be a problem with copyright issues there, though. I'll let others deal with that particular problem, however (if problem it is). -- Camembert

Talk:Degenerate Art

Thank you. I couldn't believe that. I am past newbie, so I should have realized when there was no sig and a reference to soap and lampshades...it's just very hard to see all of that work go down the tubes...whew. Greatly appreciated. --allie 02:24, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Have I said thank you yet today? I just had my first "revert" on the article, based upon POV, regardless of the fact that the info was listed on the talk page. Alas. Would it be too much to ask if you kept an eye on the page? I would be ever so grateful...I know how busy you are. There's a lot of sweat equity in this, and I am hoping for the best. Many thanks, --allie 23:36, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, I really don't have the time - if I said I'd keep an eye on it, I wouldn't be able to do a proper job of it. Good luck in keeping on top of things--I hope the article continues to improve, one way or another. --Camembert
Whoa, talk about a critique! I am still perspiring. Three days under Zosodada's penetrating edits and that article went from a C- to a solid B. It was a little scary, I'll admit - but she is unbelievable. Yep, the article certainly did improve. It has a long way to go, but it will get there eventually. So will I, with luck... --allie 20:20, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

List of free improvising musicians and groups

Hi Cam, I know your a busy man and all that, but was wondering if you'd be interested in co-watching List of free improvising musicians and groups, somebody (an anon who doesn't reply to comments on the talk pages) keeps deleting seminal groups like the magnificent Brotherhood of Breath (which as I'm sure you know included Keith Tippett, Evan Parker, Chris McGregor, Louis Moholo and just about everyone else from the 70's free improv scene as well as Iskra 1903 (Derek Bailey, Paul Rutherford and Barry Guy- they released an album for Duetsche Gramophone and maybe one or two others) and other groups and individuals, on the basis that such groups are 'irrelevant and self serving' and suchlike (which as far as I'm concerned is showing an ignorance of the history of the improv scene). Sometimes I miss these dodgy edits, so wonder if you'd mind helping to keep on top of this one? Ideally entries should be created for these groups, but I don't know enough beyond creating rather pointless sub-stubs (see my entrys on those who celebrate and Red Square (band) that I created just to at least prove that the groups existed, but provide little more useful info)

Cheers quercus robur 00:38, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi Quercus - I've got List of free improvising musicians and groups on my watchlist already, but to be honest I'm around so little nowadays that I probably won't be a lot of use keeping an eye on it. In particular, I don't really have the time to get involved in big arguments with people about that sort of stuff (or maybe it's just that I can't be arsed to have those arguments any more). I agree with you though, and I'm not exactly happy about those who celebrate being deleted. It's a shame. Anyway, good luck. --Camembert
Hi Cam- totally undertsand, my presence tends to be sporadic nowadays as well, hence the request for the extra pair of eyes! between us I'm sure we can keep a lid on it. It was indeed a shame about those who celebrate being deleted, I saw them once as part of a Company event and used to keep in touch with them for a while, their album is also bloody good (I've still got it and even play it occasionally), but having 'won' on Red Square grudgingly bowed to the 'consesnsus' process. Shame that in years to come tws will be written out of history while Queen, Guns & Roses and the like will have yet another superfluous article covering them and there ebvery crappy album release... Sometimes i do wonder what is the point! Well I've had far too much wine (whine?) tonight to best I sign off for now! quercus robur 23:12, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess

Hi. :) I wonder if you know about the Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess. To quote the page: "This WikiProject aims primarily to present all the wikipedia articles about chess in a coherent fashion. This includes the coherence of the following aspects:

  • Chess diagrams
  • Annotation of chess games
  • Notation"

The project could use some fresh blood, I just joined it and besides me there are three rather inactive users signed. I think it would be a good, centralized forum for all Wikipedia chess related discussions. --ZeroOne 16:04, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hola - I've been keeping an eye on that WikiProject page for some time now (it's on my watchlist), but I'm probably not going to sign up to it, at least not just yet. I'm spending less time on the Wikipedia than I used to, and would rather spend that time writing content than getting involved in organisational things like that. Still, if there are any interesting discussions on the talk page, I might get involved. Good luck with it :) --Camembert

the issue of school articles

In November 2003, you participated in a VfD debate over Sunset High School (Portland). The debate was archived under Talk:Sunset High School (Portland). The issue over this article remains contested. moreover, there still does not exist a wikipedia policy (as far as i can tell) over what to do in regards to articles about specific U.S. public school. The article in question has been re-nominated for VfD at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland). My hope is that a real consensus can come out of the debate, and a real policy can take shape. Take part if you are so willing. Kingturtle 02:11, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC) P.S. The history of the debate can also be reviewed and discussed at Are high schools encyclopedic? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Precedents#Are_high_schools_encyclopedic.3F_-_Yes).

Thanks for pointing it out, but I'm happier out of it. --Camembert

Einsturzende Neubaten

Hello. Im only asking you this cause you are one one the only users on the talk page for Einstürzende Neubauten. Without wishing to sound like an ignoramous, I would like to ask how you pronounce this bands name in English as I cant find this information anywhere. Thankyou. Motown Junkie 11:15, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I could have a guess, but it would just be a guess; probably the best place to ask is at article's talk page (to where I shall now copy your query), or, failing that, at the Wikipedia:Reference desk. --Camembert

PGN files

I noticed that you uploaded and linked to the Media:Immortal game.pgn file in the article Immortal game.pgn. I have been wanting to upload some pgn files to a few other articles in Category:Chess_games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Chess_games) but from looking at all the upload information it looks like only Image file types are supported. Could you possibly point me (Malathion is intrested in this as well) in the right direction on how to upload these files and get to their info pages etc. Thanks in advance. Dalf | Talk 01:51, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

To the best of my knowledge, it is no longer possible to upload .pgn files to the Wikipedia or to Wikicommons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page).
It used to be the case that one could upload any type of file in the same way as one now uploads image files; this changed sometime last year (I think) so that only certain image and sound formats were allowed (files already uploaded were not deleted, however). I asked the reason for this in the #mediawiki IRC channel and was told that allowing other file types was some sort of security issue.
I don't know much more than that (and the help pages on this, as you probably already know, are somewhat lacking). If you want to find out a bit more about it, a good starting point would probably be to ask a question at the help desk. If you manage to find out anything new, do let me know. Good luck. --Camembert
Hey, Thanks for the info. I was aftraid that was going to be the answer, infact after reading the help pages on uploading files I was going to try and start a discussion about getting PGN added. Since it is a clear-text format it does not represent that much of a security issue--infact given the buffer overflow in the GDI+ windows image library last year text is probbly mroe secure than JPG. I will poke around and try and see where this sort of request/proposal should go and start that conversation. Thanks again for your help. Dalf | Talk 21:56, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Franco-Benoni

I agree with the page move and your edits however I have a source that calls it the Franco-Sicilian and I'm guessing it is listed under d4 because of it's resemblance to the Benoni. Falphin 20:31, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

Well, if Schiller calls it the Franco-Sicilian, it's probably worth noting that in the article (though, as I'm sure you know, Schiller sometimes has a rather, um, "original" approach in his books). The way the article is now seems fine to me. --Camembert 19:27, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Can I assume this image was created by you and is thus public domain? Cheers. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 10:16, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

I'll reply on your talk page. --Camembert 20:16, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, icky. I *think* copyright is from teh first published date, but I am not sure. Thus, for the image, list it as {{fairold}}. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 02:50, May 30, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice - will do. --Camembert 12:39, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

The circle of fifths

Haven't heard from you in a while. Thought you might (or might not) be interested in the articles on keys, e.g., G major, D major, etc. Del arte 23:02, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I noticed the key articles late last night, funnily enough; I may have a proper look at them eventually and maybe mess about with them a bit, but I'm not around very much at the moment, so it's quite probable I won't get round to it. Anyway, keep up the good work and all that. --Camembert 20:25, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
