It is with regret that I have to announce my leaving of this project. I had not done much the last year, because I am mostly active on the Dutch Wikipedia now. But those things that I did had all to do with policy, and it is becoming more and more clear that my ideas of what an encyclopedia should be differ from those who are 'in command'. To avoid further clashes leading to upsetting others and myself, I am now withdrawing to nl:. I have asked to be de-sysoped, and wiam planning to not do anything but interwiki-links here any more.
I'll keep trying to make an encyclopedia, but it will be the Dutch one. I wish you luck with whatever you are doing here. Farewell. Andre Engels 08:29, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Amicalement. w:fr:Anthere
- Actually, I've had the idea many times before to, but usually was back in a few days or weeks... But last time it happened, I did go to nl: more or less for good... Only after some months I came back, and never nearly as active as before. I guess that that is what is going to happen now too. Andre Engels 16:44, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Sorry to see you go; I considered you one of the more valuable contributors I've seen. I hope you'll reconsider and come back at some point, but good luck with the nl: Wikipedia in either case. --Delirium 04:28, Dec 4, 2003 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing my mistake on the copyvio thing. I'm interested to know more about your problems with Wikipedia. I, too, have doubts as to the nature of this thing as an encyclopedia. Bmills 13:48, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Andre, I guess you're back, from your deletion of the nonsense at Phoenicians. Though I agree with you about the zaniness (I added the caveat lector), I think you should go through the deleted text and selectively restore the baby that was thrown out with the murky bathwater. Or was that just a large turnip? ...Oh well... Wetman 16:13, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)
I'm not alone in hoping that you can derive pleasure at the English-language Wikipedia once again and keep it moving forward. Relax! Remember, every library should have engraved over its door: CAVEAT LECTOR. Sometimes it feels as if Wikipedia is undermined at every turn by what my grandmother called "dirt-road Baptists." Many Baptist churches however, even in America, are on paved roads. So, if you don't feel your voice is being heard, and if zanies with dishonest agendas are overwhelming you, back off! Cut the article from your watchlist. Come back months later and see if there is anything useful in the overgrowth. If you aren't constantly being stimulated and amused at Wikipedia, it's no good: I had a good time simply with the history of Mayonnaise! Wetman 17:45, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Element volume
Thanks again for the note - I've fixed the unit issue for each element. Please make sure the nl versions are also OK now. --mav 08:25, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Snail
I have exchanged your snail image at Snail with a IMHO better one. What shall we do with the old picture? VfD? andy 22:37, 21 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- I leave that to you. As far as I'm concerned, there is no problem with deleting it, but do so only through VfD, not directly. Alternatively, you could add a second image to the page, or just keep it cluttering up the database. Andre Engels 12:14, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)
:-) Andre Engels 14:41, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Clement Brentano
I can't see my contribution any more, but if you can, compare my material with what's in Encyclopedia Britannica, and with Catholic Encyclopedia for Emmerich. You'll see that my source material isn't invented by me, but that the wording is mine. At least that's how I'd usually work. There may be some additional material I got googling "Clement Brentano." Let me know which sentences look plagiarized. Wetman 13:56, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Oop: all sentences were cribbed from the 1911 Britannica, which should have been credited. Wetman 15:00, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Robbot
Hi Andre, I see you operate a disambiguation bot. I was wondering whether you could run a disambig for me. The article biological cell was recently renamed cell (biology) and there are 100-200 links to biological cell which I'm not too keen to fix manually (to avoid double redirects). Could you run the bot to correct this? All links should be disambiguated like this:
- cell -> cell (biology) (the most common case)
- biological cell -> biological cell
Thanks. --Lexor|Talk 14:25, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Andre -- I am confused about the recent reversions made to the Concept Album article. I am new to the WikiPedia; would you mind pointing out what I did wrong and why you reverted back? Cleanup damage
Hi, i'm on a self-appointed mission that may be of no importance, and tho IMO it is unlikely to be the result of anything you shouldn't have done, i think you should know that your edit of Cleanup just after midnight UTC was logged as two edits, with the second inserting an extra copy of the whole file inside itself. If you think you might have hit "Save" twice, take counsel about the impact; if not it may be a server bug.
I'll try & dig up who advised the last person (who was at the scene twice in a week!) and pass that on to you, in case you want to pursue it with them. Tnx for your attn. --Jerzy(t) 01:33, 2004 Mar 13 (UTC)

- If you don't want to contact him, i'd like to at least let him know it did happen again. So i'd be grateful if you'd let me know you got this, and what you're thinking. Hmm. So i guess i should EMail you as well. [smile] --Jerzy(t) 01:54, 2004 Mar 13 (UTC)
- It might be that it was a copy-and-paste error on my side when I re-added my text after an edit conflict. - Andre Engels 02:15, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Hi Andre. Did you mean to unprotect the Main Page? I couldn't find any discussion of it so I assumed it was accidental and reprotected it. Angela. 01:02, Mar 14, 2004 (UTC)
- No, that was not intended. I guess I clicked on it by accident when trying to activate the window or something like that. We should really be getting a confirmation screen for protections and unprotections... - Andre Engels 01:20, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- That's what I thought, but I wanted to check as some people have suggested unprotecting it in the past. The issue of accidental protections has been brought up at Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=838716&group_id=34373&atid=411195) in the past. - How much does it cost to download a bot from sourceforge, free or some? Pumpie 14:50 (UTC), March 21, 2004
- It's completely free & open source (Python license) - Andre Engels 15:20, 21 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Does it contain viruses, few or none? Pumpie 15:02 Mar 22, 2004
- Of course not! There probably are bugs though. - Andre Engels 15:13, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Tell me which one has bugs and which ones don't, and which one does not require Python license? - Pumpie - 17:52, Mar 22 2004 (UTC)
- Bugs are still being found, so I'm not going to say which do not have it. table2wiki.py might well have bugs, in interwiki.py there might well be. Also, the constant change of Wikipedia tends to cause (easily repaired) bugs too (like, the special namespace on some language being changed, that has to be added as well).
- Regarding the Python license: They all fall under it; maybe they have to, since technically they are extensions of the Python program, which falls under that license. Even if it is not necessary, Python and wikipedia.py are used by all, and those are under the license. - Andre Engels 20:14, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Well how about new bots that hab bugs or not, is that true? - Pumpie 14:26 (UTC), Mar 25, 2004
- I don't understand the question. - Andre Engels 17:53, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- So which ones does not have bugs? - Pumpie 14:29, Mar 25, 2004 (UTC)
- One cannot tell... Most bugs that we know have been repaired, but there could still be unknown bugs. There's not many bugs in any of them, though. - Andre Engels 14:33, 26 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- So, how I and where I am going to download a bot? Pumpie 17:36, Mar 26 2004 (UTC)
- You can download the snapshot at http://sourceforge.net/projects/pywikipediabot/ or use the more up-to-date CVS version at http://sourceforge.net/projects/pywikipediabot/. Apart from the bot, you will need a reasonably recent version of Python. - Andre Engels 19:27, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Do you know the Greek alphabet so I can write with the Roman Alphabet? When I highlight and then I click a button which automatically transforms Latin alphabet content into the Greek alphabet, One example is the letter w when highlightes, when I click that button, it becomes omega. - User:Pumpie, 13:37, Mar 29, 2004 (UTC)
- I know Greek alphabet, but what would you want it for? - Andre Engels 15:38, 29 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- I want a function on the top right so I can highlight the Roman letters when I edit into the Greek alphabet. - Pumpie, 15:22, Mar 30 2004 (UTC)
- No knowledge about that. - Andre Engels 15:42, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Is there anyone who knows the Greek alphabet or any other alphabet, and syllabaries who can create a function? And may I borrow some images (especially the ones on other Wikipedias that are not on this wiki?)? Pumpie - 15:09 Mar 31, 2004 (UTC)
- Well, it would probably be possible to write a bot that takes a page in Latin alphabet, and transcribes it to Greek or vice versa. I don't see the use for it though - the Greek Wikipedia is already in Greek, and the rest should not be. The images on Wikipedia ought to be free usable by anyone under some free license like the GNU/FDL. Whether that's always the case, is another thing. On the other hand, several of the other Wikipedias are actually stricter about it than the English one, so you have good chances. - Andre Engels 15:33, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- What images do you have? - Pumpie 22:00 Mar 31, 2004 (UTC)
- That's none of your business - Andre Engels 05:56, 1 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- Dou you know how to make functions, like the one on the top when editing? - Pumpie 22:00 Mar 31, 2004 (UTC)
- No, those can only be made by those who make the Wikipedia software. - Andre Engels 05:56, 1 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Germans
I've for long (a year, actually) been itched by the way Wikipedia-links are done with often sloppy distinctions between nationality, citizenship and ethnicity (with regard to persons) and also between nations and countries. This is particularly obvious in the case of people or entities that are denoted as German. A link to the Federal Republic of Germany is often outright unhistorical and wrong, but this has until now been the most usual.
Therefore I'm considering an article on Germans, which I've started at User:Ruhrjung/Germans. I would wish to avoid lots of edit wars. In particular, I would not wish to see the current disputes over German-Polish matters automatically extend also to this article, why I kindly ask you for comments now, in advance, in order to try to find wordings acceptable to as many as possible of concerned wikipedians.
I look forward to your comments at User talk:Ruhrjung/Germans.
--Ruhrjung 23:32, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- I don't think I'm the best person to judge User:Ruhrjung/Germans. What I do wonder is how it is supposed to solve the problem you had. You could put this text on the page of ethnic German, I guess, but the problem you talk about does not get solved. And if you put it on 'Germany' or 'German', the amount of problems you create seem larger than the amount that is solved. As for the text itself - I cannot judge this kind of thing, and even if I could, I might not want to get involved anyway. - Andre Engels 07:29, 15 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Sethbot
Andre: You're right, I was misreading the code. What would be even better than automatically avoiding double redirects is if the bot could ask if I want to point the abbreviated form to the same place as the existing redirect points... so that it would prompt "Medfield, Massachusetts redirects to Medfield (town), Massachusetts" Point Medfield, MA there also? (y/n)" Is that feasible? -- Seth Ilys 20:55, 20 May 2004 (UTC)
- Sure, it's quite easy in fact. If I haven't sent you anything by the end of the weekend, just give me a sign (through email or so). - Andre Engels 09:42, 21 May 2004 (UTC)
- Yay! -- Seth Ilys 15:40, 21 May 2004 (UTC)
One way to avoid the inappropriate redirects you point out is to make a small tweak to the code so that the bot doesn't create a redirect that has either two commas or parentheses in the title. I've also responded on my talk page. -- Seth Ilys 12:58, 25 May 2004 (UTC)

Need support on an undelete. Talk:Nazism/Seperate-National Socialism I would like your support to undelete this and restore as a proper standing article. Some content was moved to the Nazism article and has been made a redirect. The Nazi article is too long. *National Socialism* was not created by either Mussolini nor Hitler and the history of its development needs to have a seperate article upon it. Discoverers web
Hi Andre, I just tried to send an email to your address listed on the Discoverers Web site, but it bounced. As you may have noticed, I didn't realise you were a WP'ian until just before I sent it. Here is the contents of it:
To: lrayment (at) ozemail.com {dot} au, engels (at) win.tue {dot} nl
Subject: Copyright on d'Entrecasteaux article
Hi there,
I was wondering if your (Leigh's) article (or parts of it) on Bruni d'Entrecasteaux at <http://www.win.tue.nl/~engels/discovery/entrecast.html> could be used at Wikipedia <http://www.wikipedia.org> ?
I haven't browsed a lot of the rest of the site there, but I was wondering (Andre) if the same can be done for other articles on the Discoverers Web?
BTW, I just noticed you (Andre) are a Wikipedian so I won't go into detail about what Wikipedia is :)
- Ah... Sorry for the bounce - I get much spam on that address, and it is forwarded to a freemail account, which through the spam had gotten full. Your request I unfortunately cannot answer. It has been given to me by the author to put on the site, which (as you may have seen) allows copying, but only for non-commercial purposes. Those articles that I have written myself may freely be used on Wikipedia. For Leigh's article you'll have to contact himself; try the address "lrayment AT ozemail.com.au", if that one does not work, you can get back to me. - Andre Engels 09:24, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Ah, no problems.. I cc'ed that email to Leigh, who has ok'ed the use of it :) I wasn't sure how to interpret the copyright page, as wikipedia itself is non-commercial, but wikipedia content is mirrored on other sites which are commercial (well, they are full of #*($& ads so I guess that counts as commercial!) Skins for some languages.
Hi André!
Some using Cyrillic languages, like Bashkir, has problems with fonts: some extra Cyrillic letters, using in Bashkir, don't exist to base fonts, such as Times New Roman, Arial, Courier. But they are in Arial unicode MS. so... May be will be good to use Arial Unicode MS font as main skin in Bashkir, Uyghur, and another languages, which will be in Wikipedia later. --Untifler 16:45, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Well, that was a mistake, wasn't it? I suggest that you reprogram the bot to go back and undo all the edits (where it is still the top edit) that it has made, and then reprogram it again so that it works correctly next time. Sigh. Noisy | Talk 21:19, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi, André! Is any comfortable way to use an image from one wikipedia in another without uploading this image, or way to copy image form one wikipedia to another? --Untifler 14:42, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- Sorry, I don't know how to do that. You'll have to ask someone else. Regarding the unilateral locking of sh.wikipedia
Hi Andre,
While sh.wikipedia is indeed supposed to have been superceeded, as far as I am aware the most recent official decision was to reopen it because although Serbocroatian is no longer the official language of a state, there are still people who advocate its use.
I'm also curious, did you follow procedure before locking it, or did you just lock it without talking about it at all first?

- I asked what to do about it on #wikipedia, and Tim Starling advised me to do it this way. - Andre Engels 00:30, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Article Licensing and Robbot
I've "started" the Free the Rambot Articles Project which aims to get users to release all of their contributions to the U.S. state, county, and city articles under the CC-by-sa 1.0 and 2.0 license (at minimum) or into the public domain if they prefer. A secondary goal is to get those users to release ALL of their edits for ALL articles. I've personally chosen to multi-license all of the rambot and Ram-Man contributions under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License so that other projects, such as WikiTravel, can use our articles. I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all your (and especially the User:Robbot) contributions (or at minimum those on the geographic articles) so that we can keep most of the articles available under the multi-license. Many users use the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or even MultiLicensePD for public domain) on their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I understand, but I thought I'd at least ask, just in case, since the Robbot's number of edits is in the top ten most. If you do want to do it, simply just copy and paste one of the above two templates into your user page and it will allow us to track those users who have done it. For example:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain (which many people do or don't like to do, see Wikipedia:Multi-licensing), you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD -- Ram-Man 14:28, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC)
Offensive vandalism (Tigriyana Wikipedia)
Hi Andre! I originally tried to contact User:Angela about this, only to find that she's away. Do Stewards have deletion powers on minority Wikipedia projects? I apologize for the link I'm about to post here, but I discovered this extremely offensive vandalism on the Tigriyana Wikipedia whilst checking its statistics: [1] (http://ti.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fucking). As I do not have sysop rights on TI, I am unable to delete the article myself. The filter on my computer won't let me open the page to edit and blank it, so I've referred it to you. Sorry. David Cannon 12:13, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Although we do not have deletion power, we do have the possibility to make someone else or ourselves moderator on such a language. I will temporarily make myself moderator to do so. I find "extremely offensive" rather exaggerated though. - Andre Engels 21:11, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Exaggerated? I may have overreacted:-) Anyway, I'm sorry to have bothered you - as it turned out, Angela somehow saw it and deleted it already. Sorry to have made unnecessary work for you. David Cannon 22:41, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Unverified images
Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:
I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 22:24, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)
P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.
- A script I had run had placed the text above. It was just an oversight. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 00:35, Dec 11, 2004 (UTC)
Category-adding bots
Hi there! I noticed that you took part in creation of the Python bot framework (pywikipediabot (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pywikipediabot/)) so perhaps you could answer my silly question I simply can't find answer to: which bot operator should I ask to add categories to pages? Precisely, I need a bot able to add Category:ogg files to ogg files from the upload log (or any other source for that matter). Could you help? -- Regards - User:Halibutt 06:03, Dec 13, 2004 (UTC)
- Which operator would be best, I do not know. But it seems that there's some programming to do as well, and I'd be willing to program and run it. - Andre Engels 10:10, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Main namespace cleanup
Heya, I've moved Andre Engels/Pages to User:Andre Engels/old-Pages. There's some edit history, so perhaps you want to keep it. Otherwise just delete it (or ask an admin to do so). xfeff;--fvw* 19:19, 2004 Dec 14 (UTC)
Charles Darwin
Hi there! User:Noisy and others have been on a crusade to delete the mention of Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln sharing a birthday. I have remained civil but others have been flaming. FastFission posted a biased comment on RfC which I have made neutral (I hope). Would you be interested in supporting my side? If so, please start at Talk:Charles_Darwin#Summary. Of course, that's my side, but the other side is strongly represented in the rest of the Talk page. Thanks Vincent 06:20, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)
tt:MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning
Hi André! Someone changed Copywrightwarning, which was used also for adding extra signs, co one new tag <charinsert></charinsert> appeared. But I don't know how to use this tag - all extra singns, which should be used in Unicode, looks like double character of ANSI.
Another request. Could you chek me into systop on ba: as ba:User:Untifler. Thanks. --Untifler 21:16, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Thank you. Where I can request it? Sorry, I can't found Wikitech-I :) --Untifler 21:44, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Mediation
I'm sorry no one has come forward. Among other things, I think the departure of several mediators (including me) to join the arbitration committee has not helped at all. There are a lot of new people being considered to join the mediation committee and hopefully one of them can help. As I'm no longer a mediator I can't do more to help, I'm sorry -- sannse (talk) 16:49, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
As Sannse said, this is a bit of an awkward time for the MedCom. If you don't wait any longer, perhaps you could just ask one of the dead certs for the MedCom personally? Nothing says you can't mediate with someone else who's qualified, and since they're going to be on the MedCom soon anyway, why not cut in line? If they're willing to temporarily freelance mediate and Noisy agrees that is. I can suggest User:Whosyourjudas and User:Jwrosenzweig. --fvw* 17:17, 2005 Jan 2 (UTC)
- As someone who's in the same position as sannse, I recommend doing what Fvw said. I highly recommend Jwrozenzweig and, as far as the existing committee go, Ed Poor - who is the master mediator. Ambi 01:45, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I'm horribly busy at present, and given the circumstances, I don't think you and Noisy should be asked to wait another 2 weeks (as a high school teacher, the time between now and semester's end is horrific...I'm staying up writing lecture notes right now when I should be sleeping, and there's a stack of essays to grade). If you and Noisy are willing to wait 2 weeks, although I know nothing about the dispute, I shall be delighted to offer all my assistance at that point -- sorry it's not better news. I don't know Whosyourjudas but I trust fvw, and certainly if you look at WP:MC you should see a slew of new applicants for the MC, hopefully one of which has more time than I do at present. Best wishes, Jwrosenzweig 06:08, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Pearle Wisebot and interwiki link controversy
Any insight into the debate on interwiki links at Wikipedia talk:Bots that you might have would be appreciated, particularly about any algorithms for tidying them properly. -- Beland 02:23, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

tyddm at westnet Flying a Kite
Hello Andre Engels I am currently writing an article on the classification of Quadrilaterals. I am sure you are aware of the (general) trapezium and the isosceles trapezium. To take the analogy into its dual form we can speak of a kite (as you know it) as the dual form of an isosceles trapezium (where the non parallel sides have equal lengths). I suspect that over a couple of generations the usage of (general) kite as a quadrilateral where one of the diagonals is bisected by the other has slipped to mean isosceles kite (where one of the diagonals is bisected by the other AT 90 DEGREES) I would describe the picture of the Kite on Wikipedia as an isosceles Kite. Its dual would then be an isosceles trapeium and the dual of a (general) kite would be a (general) trapezium. I use the British (Australian) sense of Trapezium. I would not change your article myself but point it out to you.

Order of interlang links - Which is your policy?
Hello. Could you let me know your(and your bot's) policy of ordering interlang links? I saw your vote on Wikipedia:Language order poll#By order of alphabet, based on two letter code in Jul 2004. However, you and your bot don't seem to edit as "By order of alphabet, based on two letter code," instead, according to some edit by you (you left ja: after no:) (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Province&diff=prev&oldid=11537879) and by your bot (your bot moved ja: after no:) (http://pl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Boeing_Company&diff=522504&oldid=333999), you seem to prefer "By order of alphabet, based on local language" now. Is this correct? I myself consider changing the policy from "ja: after it:" to "think Japanese as Nihongo(local lang) and put ja: after no:" ...But I wouldn't dare act against interlang likning bots. Regards. - Marsian 07:33, 2005 Apr 2 (UTC)
- Thank you for your quick reply. I understand. I look up to you. Your attitude is a good model for me. Sincerely, Marsian 03:14, 2005 Apr 3 (UTC)
