I am Arun Veembur. born on 10th August, 1981
My father is an aeronautical engineer and my mother a multi-tasking professional, also called a housewife. I am their only son. I did my schooling in Bangalore and my pre-university course in St Joseph’s College, where I studied mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science. I then finished three years of a BA in journalism, English and psychology.
I like to remark that this period was probably an intensely enjoyable time, for I remember little of it. It seems to have been an intensively social sort of existence. There were ‘houses’, trips and the occasional fall. But we move on.
My forte` is an innate curiosity about life, which I believe is best described (as put by a famous magazine) as a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy timid ignorance obstructing our progress.
Print stints
I spent a month at the reporting desk of ‘Deccan Herald’, a leading English newspaper. It was an experience that I learnt a lot from and, perhaps more importantly, enjoyed thoroughly. I even got a few by-lines. To me nothing ever looked quite as good as my name in print.
I am currently a business journalist with a US-based magazine.
Beyond curricula
I have some pretensions to being a quizzer, an interest I’ve followed since middle school, since I answered “Harshad Mehta” to ‘Who is the big bull of the stock market’. I’ve taken part in several competitions; winning several, and losing many more. I enjoy con jobs too, as long as I’m not at the receiving end.
I love travel. In fact, not just visiting places, but staying there, learning their language and culture, eating their food and understanding their jokes. I have a passion for motorcycling, especially long rides. My other interests include photography, kalaripayattu and mountaineering; and just about everything else.
That’s me.
