University of Maryland, Baltimore, (also known as UMB), is located on 56 acres (230,000 m²) in downtown Baltimore, Maryland and is part of the University System of Maryland.
UMB is the center for medical education in Maryland. It comprises six professional schools:
- College of Dental Surgery (http://www.dental.umaryland.edu/), first in the world, (founded 1840)
- Graduate School (http://graduate.umaryland.edu/) (founded 1917)
- School of Law (http://www.law.umaryland.edu/) (founded 1823)
- School of Medicine (http://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/) (founded 1807)
- School of Nursing (http://nursing.umaryland.edu/) (founded 1889)
- School of Pharmacy (http://www.pharmacy.umaryland.edu/) (founded 1841)
- School of Social Work (http://www.ssw.umaryland.edu/) (founded 1961)
The Graduate School was founded in 1918. UMB offers 43 degree programs in total.
UMB also houses Davidge Hall, built in 1812 it's the oldest building in the Northern Hemisphere in continuous use for medical education and the School of Dental Surgery was the first dental school in the world. The University of Maryland, Baltimore also houses the University of Maryland Medical Center.
The professional schools housed at the University of Maryland, Baltimore may also simply use the name "University of Maryland" when describing themselves despite the fact that the University of Maryland, College Park also refers to itself simply as the University of Maryland. There is relatively little confusion resulting from the shared name due to the fact that the University of Maryland, College Park does not house any professional schools, except for the business school, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore does not offer undergraduate education or NCAA sports. The ability for each school to use the "University of Maryland" name is in recognition of their shared history. Today, besides being University System of Maryland institutions, neither school is a part of the other.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore is also often erroneously mistaken for the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), which is a separate University System of Maryland institution located outside the City of Baltimore.
The university is served by the University Center/Baltimore Street station of the Baltimore Light Rail system, which is at the eastern edge of campus.
