Ufa (Уфа́) (oo-FAH) (Tatar Ufa, Öfä; Bashkir Өфө) is the capital of Bashkortostan (or Bashkiria), a republic in central Russia. Population, 1.1 million (as of 2003). Geographical location, Template:Coor dm.
Ufa is one of the industrial centres around the Urals, and is situated at the confluence of the Belaya (Aghidhel) and Ufa rivers. Industries include electrical and mining equipment, oil refining, petrochemicals, synthetic rubber, and processed foods. A fortress was built on the site in 1574, and the city was founded in 1586.
One of the city symbols is a monunent to Salawat Yulayev.

April 2005 Student Protests
On April 12, The Guardian newspaper reported that a 20,000 strong student-led protest was planned for Saturday 16th April against the Bashkortostani President Murtaza Rakhimov. The protest is reportedly organised by Pora [1] (http://www.guardian.co.uk/russia/article/0,2763,1457293,00.html).
