USS Edson (DD-946), named for Colonel Merritt Austin “Red Mike” Edson USMC (1897-1955) awarded the Medal of Honor while serving as Commanding Officer of the First Marine Raider Battalion during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands on the night of 13-14 September 1942, was a Forrest Sherman class destroyer built by the Bath Iron Works Corporation at Bath in Maine and launched by Mrs. M. A. Edson.
Edson served as plane guard for carriers on Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf, participated in Sea Dragon operations, patrolled on search and rescue duties and carried out Naval Gunfire Support missions during the conflict in Vietnam.
