Tuckabatchie
|
Tuckabatchie is the site of the 18th and 19th century Alabahmu (Alabama) Creek Nation capital. Located near the Tallapoosa river in Elmore County, Alabama. Along with the neighboring town of Tallassee, Alabama, it was believed to have been the second largest Indian settlement during that time in North America. Tecumseh, unifying chief of the Shawnee, held a council in Tuckabatchie urging the Creeks to join the confederation of First Nations in their armed insurgence against white squatters. This meeting led eventually to a schism between the Alabama Creek Nation, resulting in the U.S.-backed White Stick Creeks and the guerilla Red Stick Creeks.
