Geography

Despite its promising name of Lagoon, the region has a quite arid climate, with plants generally found in steppes and the animals commonly found in these areas. The cities of Torreón, Gomez Palacio and Lerdo make up the Comarca Lagunera (Lagoon Shire), which is a basin within the Chihuahuan Desert that has a high economic activity. About the end of the twentieth century it started to become one of the most important cities in northern Mexico, certainly the most important one in central northern Mexico, besides Monterrey and Ciudad Juárez.
Economy

Torreón, with its companions of the Comarca Lagunera, are empowered mainly by the production of milk. Although it also has a high mineral distillery, Met-Mex Peñoles, and several breweries.
Sports
The city is among the few Northern Mexican cities that have a soccer team, the Santos Laguna (Saints). It also has a baseball team called the Vaqueros Laguna (Cowboys). And a basketball team. The must visit "Cristo de las Noas" is the 2nd biggest Cristo Sanctuary in Latin America, is the image of Jesus with it´s extended arms, symboling protection for the habitants of Torreon, it is situated on the top of a hill.
