Toronto—Danforth is a Canadian federal and provincial electoral district, or riding. This riding represents the Danforth area of Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the Canadian parliament. The riding was created in 1976 under the name Broadview—Greenwood out of Broadview and portions of York East. It was renamed Toronto—Danforth in 1996 on the suggestion of Dennis Mills, the riding's Member of Parliament. Many local citizens were upset at the name change, particularly due to the lack of public say in the matter. Toronto-Danforth includes a vibrant array of ethnicities, including large Greek, Chinese, Muslim and East-Indian communities. The riding is bounded on the north and west by the Don River, on the south by Lake Ontario, and on the east by Coxwell Avenue.
On June 28, 2004, NDP leader Jack Layton was elected as the Member of Parliament of the riding, upsetting longtime Liberal incumbent Dennis Mills. Provincially the riding is represented by Marilyn Churley of the NDP.
Municipally, the southern part of the riding (Ward 31) is represented by councillor Paula Fletcher. The northern part of the riding (Ward 29) is represented by Case Ootes.
It is often said that the northern portion of the riding, East York, tends to lean right-of-centre, while the southern half, including Riverdale, Leslieville and Queen-Broadview Village, usually swings to the left. This can be seen through the sharp contrast in political ideologies by conservative East York councillor Case Ootes and social-democratic councillor Paula Fletcher in the Riverdale portion.
Currently, MP Jack Layton is in the process of receiving neighbourhood input to yet another name change to the riding. Layton's supposed choice is East York-Danforth-Riverdale. This modification likely appeals to East York residents who are still proud of their pre-amalgamation heritage.
