Tokyo Bay (東京湾; Tōkyō-wan) is a bay in the southern Kanto region 「関東地方」of Japan, surrounded by the Boso Peninsula 「房総半島」(Chiba Prefecture「千葉県」) and the Miura Peninsula「三浦半島」 (Kanagawa Prefecture「神奈川県」). The ports of Tokyo「東京」, Chiba「千葉」, Kawasaki「川崎」, Yokohama「横浜」, and Yokosuka「横須賀」 are all located on Tokyo Bay.
On the western coast of Tokyo Bay, between Tokyo and Yokohama, the Keihin Industrial Area 「京浜工業地帯」has been developed since the Meiji Era「明治時代」. This was expanded to the Keiyo Industrial Area「京葉工業地帯」 along the north and east coasts after World War II.
The Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line bridge/tunnel crosses Tokyo Bay between Kawasaki and Kisarazu「木更津」; ferries also cross the bay toward the Uraga Channel 「浦賀水道」between Kurihama 「久里浜」and Kanaya「鋸南」.
Tokyo Bay was the venue for Commodore Matthew Perry's early negotiations with the Japanese bakufu 「幕府」in the 1850's, as well as most official Japanese-European contacts preceding the Meiji Restoration「明治維新」.
