This Is The Place State Park
|
The This Is The Place State Park is a Utah State Park located outside of Salt Lake City. The park is more of a historical monument than an effort to preserve natural scenery. The place where the park is located is reputed to be the location where Brigham Young said "This is the Place." Meaning that the valley below would be where the Latter-Day Saints would build a city.
It is believed by the LDS that Brigham Young had a vision shortly after the LDS were exiled from Nauvoo, Illinois. In the vision he saw the place where the LDS people could settle and build a city that they would not be 'kicked out of.' As the account goes, Brigham Young was very sick and was riding in the back of a wagon. After cresting a hill he asked to look out of the wagon so the people with him opened the canvas cover and propped him up so he could look out. He then said "This is the Place" and the word was distributed through the camp to stop and settle in the valley.
The park has a statue depicting the event, a state-operated visitors center and boasts an excellent view of the City and the Valley.
