The Whitlams
|
The Whitlams is an Australian band that formed in late 1992 in Newtown, Sydney, Australia. The initial line-up was that of Tim Freedman, Stevie Plunder and Andy Lewis, who - without a drummer - developed their songs acoustically on Saturday afternoons at the Sandringham Hotel in King Street. The band's name is a tribute to former Australian prime minister, Gough Whitlam.
In early 1996, when the band was enjoying the success of the single I Make Hamburgers, tragedy struck when founding member Stevie Plunder was found dead at the bottom of a cliff on January 26, Australia Day. After a break of several months, it was decided the band would keep going, and went on to record the album Eternal Nightcap - which went on to sell over 200,000 units and won the band three ARIA awards in 1998: Best Independent Album, Song of the Year and Best Group - with the award for the latter, presented by the band's namesake Gough Whitlam.
Several of the band's songs were played during the 2000 Sydney Olympics as examples of Australian pop culture.
Their most recent line up consists of Tim Freedman on Piano, Jak Housden on Guitar, Warwick Hornby on Bass Guitar and Terepai Richmond on the drums.
Both Tim Freedman & Jak Housden have successful solo careers.
The Whitlams have a fanclub Friends Of The Whitlams (FOWs) of which more information can be found on their website.
