The Last Book in the Universe is a science fiction novel by Rodman Philbrick. Set in a cyberpunk dystopia, its protagonist and narrator is an epileptic named Spaz.
This book takes place in a future in which the world has been disturbed by an earthquake called "The Big Shake". The only place in which everyone lives happily is called Eden, but only the Genetically Improved (known as "Proov") are permitted to live there. The story begins with the main character, Spaz, talking about his adventures with an old man called Ryter, a young boy called Little Face, and a young Proov girl named Lanaya whom Spaz met in an trading market.
Spaz is only 14 or 15 years old, but his adoptive family has kicked him out because he is an epileptic. Spaz's adoptive father did this in order to keep Spaz away from his adoptive sister, Bean. The plot begins when Spaz receives a message from Bean, telling him that she is very sick with Leukemia and wants him to see her before she dies. Spaz then meets Lanaya and they travel to Eden to find a cure for Bean.
The story has an indeterminate ending.
