Envisioned by Jamshetji Tata and established in 1907, Tata Steel (TISCO) is Asia's first and India's largest integrated private sector steel company. Tata Steel is 4 million tonne steel giant. The plant is located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India. The registered office is at Mumbai, India.
Tata Steel's turnover in fiscal 2002-03 was nearly Rs 9800 crores. The company's profit in the same year was Rs 1,012 crores, which is its highest ever profit and it produced a record-breaking 3.98 million tonnes of saleable steel. In fiscal 2003-04, turnover rose to Rs 12,000 crores (about US $2.8 billion) with a profit of over Rs 1700 crores. Expected turnover and profit in 2004-05 are Rs 15,000 and 3500 crores respectively.
Management
Mr. Ratan Naval Tata is the chairman and Mr. Muthuraman is the Managing Director of the Company. Dr. Tridibesh Mukherjee and Mr. Arun Narayan Singh are Deputy Managing Director of the company.
Social cause
Tata Steel has been committed to the social cause and is responsible for the running of Jamshedpur through the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC). It manages the municipal and all other civic services and amenities for the township of Jamshedpur and has been given the ISO 14000 Environment Management System Certification, the first in the country.
Current and Future Plans
Tata Steel is rapidly expanding capacity and plans to produce 15 million tonnes (MT) of steel annually by 2010. It acquired Singapore's NatSteel in August 2004. This has added 2 MT to its capacity. It is close to completing a 1 MT capacity expansion in its Jamshedpur plant. The expansion is scheduled to be completed by September 2005. In addition a 6 MT greenfield plant is to be developed in Kalinganagar, Orissa, India (to be commissioned in 2010) and another 2.4 MT capacity expansion will be taken up in Jamshedpur (to be completed in 2008).hi:टाटा आयरन ऐंड स्टील कंपनी
